01Reading the heat radar – heat waves and warm air masses

The heat radar uses the same temperature heatmap as our temperature radar, but focuses on warm and hot areas. Heat waves form when high-pressure systems let warm air stagnate for several days – especially in cities and inland regions.

Watch for connected red areas and whether heat barely eases at night: If values stay above 20 °C, you have a tropical night – a typical sign of persistent heat waves.

03Recognizing a heat wave in Germany

In Central Europe, heat waves usually occur in high summer when subtropical air flows in from the south or southeast. The heat radar shows whether warm air is spreading over Germany or whether cooler maritime air from the north brings relief.

Cities heat up more than rural areas – the map shows modeled air temperature at 2 m height, not asphalt temperature. Humidity and wind are decisive for how it feels.

04Extreme heat – when does it become dangerous?

From persistently high temperatures above 30 °C, the risk of heat-related harm rises – especially for children, older people and during physical work. Combine the heat radar with official weather alerts: Heat warning levels are often issued there before it becomes obvious on the map.

Thunderstorms can abruptly change the situation after several hot days. If the heat radar still shows warm air but storm cells appear on the horizon, check the thunderstorm radar.

05What to do during weather alerts

  • Fluids: Drink regularly – even without feeling thirsty. Plan breaks in the shade for outdoor physical work.

  • Midday sun: Reduce time outdoors between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the map shows persistently high values.

  • Alerts: During official heat warnings (orange/red), keep a close eye on especially vulnerable people.

  • Cooling: Darken rooms during the day, use night ventilation. Cooler coastal or upland areas can bring short-term relief.

What is the difference between the heat radar and the temperature radar?+
Both use the same Windy temperature map (2 m air temperature). The heat radar explains the map with a focus on heat waves, summer extremes and health tips. The temperature radar covers the whole year – including cold and fronts.
At what temperature is it considered a heat wave?+
In Germany, a heat wave often means at least three consecutive days with daily highs from 30 °C. Official warnings can be issued at shorter duration or when combined with high night temperatures – check the weather alerts map.
Does the heat radar show perceived temperature?+
No – it is modeled air temperature at 2 m height. Wind and humidity strongly change how it feels. In muggy heat, also use the dew point and humidity radar.
Can I see the trend over the last few hours?+
Yes – with the timelapse in the embedded map you play back temperature development over the last hour and see whether heat is building or easing.
