01Reading the wind radar – particles and colors

The animated particles follow wind direction. The faster they move and the warmer the color, the higher the wind speed. This lets you spot storm fronts, coastal winds and low-pressure zones at a glance.

For severe weather, wind is often the first sign of an approaching low. Combine the wind map with wind gusts, air pressure and weather alerts for a complete picture.

02Storms and storm warnings – when does it get dangerous?

From wind force 8 to 9 (Beaufort scale) or storm gusts above 75 km/h, the risk of falling trees, roof tiles and traffic disruption rises. Hurricane-force gusts are life-threatening.

During official storm warnings you should avoid being outdoors, secure loose items and close windows. Our wind radar shows the spatial extent and development of wind fields live.

Frequently asked questions

What do the flow lines on the wind radar show?+
They visualize wind direction and relative speed. Faster particles mean stronger wind at the selected height level (usually near the ground).
Wind vs. wind gusts – what is the difference?+
Wind is the average value over time. Wind gusts are short peaks that can be significantly higher during thunderstorms and storm lows.
