01Understanding and assessing wind gusts

Gusts form in turbulent air, thunderstorms or strong pressure gradients. They can appear within seconds and be much stronger than averaged wind – which is why they matter especially for construction, shipping and traffic.

On the map you often recognize regions with high gust values as core zones of lows or along cold fronts. Always compare with official weather alerts.

03Thunderstorm gusts and downbursts

During thunderstorms, downbursts can produce locally extreme peaks – often ahead of or beneath the cell. Then the combination of wind gust and thunderstorm radar helps: lightning shows the active cell, gusts the ground-level danger.

Squall lines bring narrow, intense gust fronts. The timelapse shows whether the line is moving toward you – seek shelter in time.

04When do gusts become dangerous?

From about 60–75 km/h, the risk of minor damage and unsafe cycling rises. Hurricane-force gusts from around 100 km/h are extreme – severe weather warnings usually apply then.

What matters is not only the absolute value but the jump compared to mean wind: High gustiness means turbulent, hard-to-read conditions – especially in cities between high-rises and on coasts.

05What to do during weather alerts

  • Loose items: Secure awnings, furniture and construction materials during storm gusts – gusts often hit suddenly.

  • Trees and roads: Avoid forests and tree-lined roads when high gust values combine with wet ground.

  • Roofs and scaffolding: Stop work at height when gusts are rising and heed warnings.

  • Coast and sea: Gusts and sea state reinforce each other – read the wave radar and wind gust map together.

  • Thunderstorm gusts: Ahead of a cell, downburst gusts can be extreme – open the thunderstorm radar in parallel.

  • After the storm: Only go back outside or clean up when gusts and warnings have clearly eased.
