Rain does not fall evenly from the sky – it arrives in bands, showers and slow-moving systems. The rain radar makes these structures visible: where is it raining heavily right now, where is a shower approaching, and is a cell stuck over one spot?

01Reading the rain radar – from drizzle to heavy rain

Light, pale areas mean light precipitation – often drizzle or thin showers. Medium blue tones show moderate rain that wets roads and reduces visibility. Dark, saturated colors mark intense showers or thunderstorm rainfall with high mm/h values.

Watch shape and motion: narrow, elongated bands point to fronts or squall lines. Spot-like, isolated patches are typical showers or thunderstorm cells. If a patch stays over the same spot while the color grows darker, flood risk increases – even without an official warning.

Zoom to your surroundings. Regional radar composites in Central Europe are detailed enough to decide whether you can still dash to the shops or should wait.

03Frontal rain, showers, thunderstorm rain – different risks

Frontal rain is often widespread and long-lasting. It brings a lot of water over many hours – rivers rise, soils saturate. Showers are short and intense, sometimes with sun in between. Thunderstorm rain combines extreme intensity with short duration but can flood basements and underpasses in minutes.

On the map you recognize frontal rain by broad, connected areas with steady motion. Thunderstorm rain appears as highly intense islands, often alongside lightning activity on the thunderstorm radar. Showers sit in between: localized, mobile, hard to forecast.

04Heavy rain – when it becomes dangerous

It becomes critical when a lot of water falls in a short time or when rain keeps pouring over the same spot for long. Sealed cities do not drain water – underpasses, underground garages and subway stations are risk points. Slopes can trigger hillside runoff and debris flows, even kilometers from the actual rain center.

Alarm signals on the map: increasingly dark colors, slowed or stalled cell motion, simultaneous lightning activity. Add weather warnings – during orange or red act immediately, do not wait until water is visible.

Do not drive through standing water: 20 cm of current can sweep a car away, depth is often underestimated. Detours are cheaper than a total loss.

05Timelapse and short-term development

The timelapse of the last hour is the rain radar's strongest tool. You see whether a shower is heading toward you, passing by, or building up. Forecast buttons on the map show model-based development – useful for the next 1–3 hours, but with uncertainty.

Use the timelapse before you leave: take a rain jacket or postpone an appointment? A 60-second glance often saves more than five weather apps.

06Rain likelihood – humidity and dew point as early signs

Before rain becomes visible, humidity often rises. When the dew point is close to air temperature, the air is saturated – fog, drizzle or showers become more likely. On muggy summer days with a high dew point, intense afternoon showers can form quickly.

Check humidity and dew point maps in the morning, rain and thunderstorm radar in the afternoon – that way you spot the pattern earlier than with a simple percentage in a weather app.

07Rain through the year – different patterns

In winter widespread precipitation often dominates – snow or long-lasting rain on fronts. Spring and autumn bring changeable showers. Summer delivers localized thunderstorm showers with high local intensity. The map helps in every season, but interpretation differs: in winter endurance matters, in summer peak intensity.

During snowfall switch to the snow radar or snow depth map – rain layers may then show only the liquid fraction or model values in mixed form.

08What to do in heavy rain

  • Standing water: Do not drive through flooded roads or underpasses – depth and current are often underestimated.

  • Stationary cells: If a dark patch stays in the same place, flood risk rises – even before water is visibly pooling.

  • Check warnings: During orange or red weather warnings act immediately, do not wait until rain becomes visible.

  • Basements and garages: During prolonged heavy rain avoid risk areas and move valuables to higher floors.

What is the difference between live radar and forecast?+
Live radar shows measured precipitation from the last hour and the current state. The forecast (Forecast tab) shows model-expected rain for the coming hours and days. For showers in the next few minutes the timelapse in live radar is usually more accurate.
How do I play back the last hour?+
Bottom left on the map you will find the play button (▶). It runs the rain radar as a timelapse in short minute steps – not large jumps. With the speed levels you see whether a shower is heading toward you, passing by, or stalling.
How accurate is the rain radar in Germany?+
In Central Europe the radar network is dense – deviations are often only a few kilometers spatially and 10–15 minutes in time. In mountains and at radar edges the display can be less sharp.
What does a dark spot directly over my location mean?+
Intense precipitation – often at least moderate to heavy rain. Check the timelapse: is it getting stronger, staying, passing by? With persistently dark colors for 30+ minutes flood risk increases.
Rain radar vs. weather app forecast – which is better?+
Forecasts say what is likely. The radar shows what is happening now and just happened. For the next 30–90 minutes the radar is often more precise than daily overviews.
Can it rain without showing on the radar?+
Very light drizzle or rain below the radar detection threshold can be underrepresented. Brand-new showers also need minutes before they appear.
How do I spot heavy rain on the map?+
Very dark, high-contrast patches with sharp edges and rapid intensity increase in the timelapse. Combined with lightning on the thunderstorm radar that strengthens the assessment.
Does the map show rain for tomorrow?+
Model and time controls allow forecast periods. For tomorrow weather warnings and model forecasts are useful additions – live radar primarily shows current and very recent precipitation.
