Swimming weather – air, rain and wind for bathing

Windy does not measure water temperature – for that you need local bathing water data. For air conditions, rain showers and wind at the lake you will find the matching maps below: plan beach, lake and outdoor pool days realistically.

01Swimming weather – which maps for what

Temperature radar: air warmth at 2 m height – a good guide for outdoor pools and sunbathing, not water temperature. Rain radar: summer thunderstorms and afternoon showers. Wind radar: cooling and swell on North and Baltic Sea.

Scrub forward on the timeline for temperature and rain: when heat rises, the afternoon is often warmest – and thunderstorm risk rises at the same time.

02How to read the map in 10 seconds

Warmth

Air temperature

From around 24 °C a swim day feels pleasant. Coasts are often cooler than inland – zoom the map to your region.

Rain

Avoid showers

Check the rain radar in parallel: summer thunderstorms can build quickly in the afternoon.

Wind

Lake & coast

Strong wind cools at the water and builds waves – also watch the wind map for North and Baltic Sea.

03Swimming lakes and coasts in Germany

Popular regions like Mecklenburg Lake District, Lake Constance, Chiemsee or Baltic Sea islands react differently to wind direction. East wind often brings cooler air to the Baltic coast, foehn at Alpine lakes sometimes surprising warmth.

Water temperature itself is not on our maps – use state monitoring stations or tourism portals. After several hot days lakes warm quickly at the surface; after rain and wind they cool down.

04Tips for a safe swim day

Do not forget sun protection – add the UV guide and cloud map. Leave the water immediately when thunderstorm warnings are issued. On rivers and lakes: heavy rain upstream can change level and current.

For North and Baltic Sea it pays to check wind and wave radar: fresh to strong wind makes swimming uncomfortable or dangerous.

Frequently asked questions

Does the map show water temperature?+
No, it shows air temperature and weather conditions. For water temperatures use local monitoring stations or state bathing water apps.
From what temperature is swimming weather worth it?+
Subjectively from about 22–24 °C air temperature. Wind, cloud cover and sun vs. shade matter just as much.
Can it be cold at the lake despite sunshine?+
Yes. Cooling wind from the water, onshore winds or thunderstorm outflow can drop air temperature sharply while the sun still shines.
How do I spot thunderstorm risk on a swim day?+
Check thunderstorm radar and weather alerts in the afternoon. In midsummer heat, showers often form quickly and locally.
