Frost ice forms when moist air hits ground below 0 °C. The frost map shows the height of the 0 °C isotherm – when it is near the ground or below, risk rises in low-lying areas.
Black ice occurs when rain falls on frozen ground. Then the rain radar shows precipitation while the freezing level stays low – a dangerous combination.
When the freezing level is near the ground, frost ice forms – especially at night and early morning.
Fog can condense moisture on cold roads – keep the fog radar in view.
Official ice warnings appear on the weather alerts map – do not look at temperature alone.
